Fintoil

From the beginning, Fintoil’s philosophy has been to combine sustainable and profitable business. We replace fossil raw materials with renewables.

The company was founded by Hannu Näsi and Keijo A. Ukkonen in 2017. In just a couple of years, the project received funding, thanks to our lead investor Taaleri and a select group of Finnish private investors. Testament to the solidity of the venture, some of the best minds in the tall oil and forest industries joined the company from the get-go.

December 2020 Fintoil received its environmental permit for the biorefinery to be built in the port of HaminaKotka and construction began a couple of months later. Hard work was rewarded already in Autumn 2022 – the refinery construction was complete and our customers received their first renewable products. Since then, all 31 Fintoilers have been dedicated to running a refinery that contributes to a sustainable tomorrow with every drop it produces.

Technology

Fintoil refines Crude Tall Oil. Crude Tall Oil, CTO is a by-product of the kraft pulping process, which means our raw material perpetually renews in nature.

Our refinery’s production process is based on fractional distillation, which means using vacuum and heat energy to distil the raw material into its component parts – fractions.

At its core, the process itself is nothing new. A Finnish chemist by the name of Alfons Hellström developed the method already in 1913 at the Enso-Gutzeit mills in Kotka, Finland. Fintoil brought this innovation back to its birthplace.

Old as the method may be, our refinery is ultramodern. Fintoil’s biorefinery’s maximum feed capacity is 200 000 tons of CTO per annum, making it the world’s third largest CTO refinery in the world. Since slowing down is not in the plans, we’ve also designed the refinery to easily allow feed capacity expansion in the future.
